Houston-based Amerex Natural Gas Inc. and sister company AmerexPower Inc. together bought the gas and electricity brokeragebusinesses of Houston-based BTU Brokers Ltd. for an undisclosedprice. As a result, Amerex’s daily average of physical and papergas deals grew 12.4% to $287 million, and physical and paper powerdeals increased 5% to $175 million for a combined annual value of$121 billion in gas and power deals.

With its seemingly bottomless stomach rumbling again, EnergyEast bought Berkshire Energy Resources for $96 million last week inan attempt to complement its growth strategy and gain new gascustomers in western Massachusetts. The companies said they expectto complete the transaction within 12 months. As part of the deal,Energy East also assumed $40 million of Berkshire’s preferred stockand long-term debt.

Unico Inc. of Stamford, CT, bought Silver Valley Energy Inc.,including its proven oil and gas reserves located in the GlassMountains of Pecos County, TX, for an undisclosed amount. Theproperty is valued at more than $40 million based upon a recentindependent analysis.

Calpine Corp. announced it has bought the development rights tobuild, own and operate a 500 MW natural gas-fired cogen facility inPittsburg, CA, from Enron Corp. The Los Medanos Energy Center(formerly called the Pittsburg District Energy Facility) recentlywas licensed by the California Energy Commission after acomprehensive year-long environmental and technical review.Construction of the $350 million facility is underway.

Southwest Power LLC, an entity owned partly by Enron bought LasVegas Cogeneration LP and SUNCO Ltd. from The United Co. Las VegasCogeneration owns a 50 MW combined cycle power plant in North LasVegas. Designated as a qualifying facility under the PublicUtilities Regulatory Policy Act of 1978, the plant delivers powerunder contract to Nevada Power while SUNCO serves as the plant’sthermal host.

Orion Power Holdings Inc., jointly owned by affiliates ofGoldman, Sachs & Co. and Constellation Energy, bought theAstoria Generating Station, Gowanus Gas Turbine and Narrows GasTurbine facilities from Consolidated Edison Co. of New York forabout $550 million.

Houston-based Energy Solutions Inc. (ESI), the developer of gasand risk management software GASMAN, has been acquired byLICENERGY of Denmark. The deal is intended to create a company witha larger market presence in the transaction management andconsulting arena. Energy Solutions will be renamed Energy SolutionsInternational.
