Freezing Temps Overload PG&E Systems

Extreme cold, with both gas heating customers and electric powercustomers pulling on gas supplies, pushed demand on Pacific Gas& Electric’s gas system from 3 Bcf/d to 4.5 Bcf/d Monday,sending the California ISO into an emergency alert situation andforcing the cut-off of some interruptible power contracts.

Oneok and Magnum Hunter Align

Oneok Inc. and Magnum Hunter Resources Inc. have created astrategic alliance to maximize gas production and developmentopportunities for both companies. Oneok will buy $50 million ofMagnum Hunter convertible preferred stock, becoming a 31% equityowner. Oneok will acquire $10 million of Magnum Hunter’s pendingacquisition of Spirit 76, including reserves and a gatheringsystem. Oneok also will market all of Magnum Hunter’s Oklahomaproduction and have the right to participate in Magnum Hunter’sOklahoma acquisitions.

Mitchell Plans to Reduce Staff

Mitchell Energy & Development Corp. said it plans to reduceits work force in February through both a voluntary incentiveretirement program and staff cuts, but it did not say how manypositions would be eliminated. The company currently has 1,125employees at offices in east and north Texas. Reductions areexpected throughout the company’s operating areas, not only in theHouston area.

$2.00 Level No Problem for January Futures

A combination of copious amounts of gas both in the pipe andground, and very little weather demand had the stage set perfectlyfor the futures market to trend lower Monday. But despite all theominous fundamental news and bearish sentiment, few traders wereprepared for the price erosion that occurred in early tradingyesterday. The January contract gapped dramatically lower on theopen and quickly set a $1.97 low in the first half hour of trading.That left the spot month to trade sideways for the rest of the daybefore settling at $1.976. In doing so, the January contractcrushed its previous life-of-contract low of $2.085.

Traders See Bears Coming Out of the Woodwork

It looks like bears are roaming the market woods for the holidayseason, said a producer noting new softness in both futures andcash prices Friday. No nay-sayers to her assessment could be foundas sources agreed that weather and storage fundamentals continue tolook weak for the foreseeable future, barring a surprise blizzardor two. A marketer said he “wouldn’t be surprised if we end up withDecember indexes looking a lot like November’s.”

Oneok Pays $54 Million for 75 Bcfe Reserves

Oneok completed two reserve acquisitions totaling $54 millionwith estimated proven reserves that could exceed 75 Bcfe. Bothdeals are for primarily natural gas reserves in Oklahoma. Acash-for-stock agreement was made to acquire the privately heldOklahoma properties of Anderman Oil Corp., AOL Holdings Inc., andMohan Petroleum Oklahoma Inc. The purchase price is $28.5 million,subject to certain adjustments, with an effective date of Aug. 1,1998. Oneok also will acquire properties from St. Mary Land &Exploration Co. for $25.5 million, subject to adjustments, with aneffective date of Sept. 1.

Futures Receive Boost from Rocketing Cash Prices

High volatility continued in the natural gas pit Tuesday whentraders tested both sides of the market during a session that sawlittle in the way of fresh fundamental news. In the end, supportivecash prices-that were up 20 or more cents in mostlocations-provided the incentive for futures to trend higher. TheDecember contract led the way, eeking out a 4.9 cent gain to settleat $2.436 in light to moderate trading activity yesterday.

Bidweek Mostly Softer; Aftermarket Looks Firmer

Prices continued to weaken at nearly all points Tuesday in boththe incremental and October bidweek markets. Offshore supplies wereslow in returning from hurricane-related outages, but tradersseemed to discount that factor and to depend on abundant gaselsewhere to take up the slack. They also observed that weather andstorage fundamentals remain weak.

Missing Gas Fails to Avert September, October Declines

Even with massive amounts of offshore gas remaining off-lineMonday, the gas markets for both late September and October bidweekchose to pay more attention to bearish fundamentals elsewhere.Except for rises of a nickel or more for deliveries in theNortheast market area, which depends mainly on Gulf Coast supplies,incremental September numbers were falling by a dime or more atmost points.

Gas Regulators Get Praise, Advice from IEA

While efforts to deregulate the electric industry at both thestate and federal level drag on, at least one internationalobserver found U.S. gas deregulation worthy of praise. RobertPriddle, executive director of the International Energy Agency(IEA) in Paris, told reporters at the 17th Congress of the WorldEnergy Council that the United States leads the world in gascompetition.
