Sempra’s Solid Financial Muscle Expands with Dynegy LNG Purchase

Coming off a remarkable year with solid liquidity, an in-the-black balance sheet and a growing energy trading business, Sempra Energy has begun shopping for assets. Year-end results last week boasted of a 14% earnings increase, and the company used its financial muscle to acquire Dynegy Inc.’s proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal project in Louisiana for only $20 million down.

FERC Hands Pipeline Certificates to Georgia Strait, Sonat, Northwest, Others

FERC was dealing out pipeline certificates like cards at a Black Jack table last Wednesday at its regular agenda meeting. Recipients included the Georgia Strait Crossing pipeline, Northwest Pipeline for a mainline expansion, Southern Natural for its South System II expansion, South Carolina Pipeline for a new line to the Elba Island LNG terminal, Millennium Pipeline (see separate story), two projects designed to serve Long Island (see separate story), and to Northern Natural Gas for compression expansion in Nebraska. Kinder Morgan Texas also won a presidential permit for a border crossing project.

CA Votes $400 Million to Buy Power

As the state faced the threat of a third day of rollingblack-outs Friday, the California government enacted legislationproviding $400 million to the state water resources agency so itcan substitute for the two failing utilities, Pacific Gas &Electric and Southern California Edison, in buying bulk power forconsumers in northern California.
