ExxonMobil Corp., which environmental groups have long berated, is the “green company of the year,” according to Forbes Magazine. The reason, said the magazine, was the producer’s turn toward natural gas projects, along with a big bet on renewable technology.

Southwest Gas Berated for Poor Hedging Practices

The staff of the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada has determined that Southwest Gas overpaid for natural gas last summer by about $8.13 million because of a poor hedging program and over-reliance on the spot market. As a result, the staff has recommended that amount be taken out of a rate balancing account and that the utility be ordered to improve its risk management practices.

FERC Rejects Chicken Little Y2K Plans

FERC said yesterday it has found Chicken Littles in the Y2Kplanning departments of several gas pipeline companies. TheCommission berated pipeline Y2K planners for crying “the sky isfalling” without any real good evidence that it is. To thosepipelines seeking a complete shut-down of multiple nominationperiods just prior to and after Jan. 1, FERC explained that so farthey have not provided convincing arguments why such drasticmethods would be required.
