SoCal Demand Soon May Exceed Supply

Demand is expected tofar exceed supply in the burgeoning southern end of California andon both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border, where population,industrial and energy growth are surpassing expectations.

NiSource, Restructuring Spoil Columbia’s Results

Columbia Energy Group revealed last week that its defense against a hostile takeover by NiSource has become quite costly, reaching $9 million in pre-tax expenses during the third quarter. The company also took a $4 million pre-tax charge during the third quarter for restructuring its retail marketing operation. The two setbacks combined led to a net loss of $9.7 million (12 cents per share) during the quarter compared to net income of $11.2 million (13 cents per share) during the same period last year. The company reported income from continuing operations of $800,000, or 1 cent per share, compared to $12.2 million, or 14 cents/share in 3Q98.

The rush to build new gas-fired generation has become nothingless than a frenzy, according to a new report which shows thatsince summer the tally on new generation projects has grown 61% to59,000 MW. That’s up from 49,463 MW reported in late-September, and36,600 MW in July, said Resource Data International’s (RDI) EnergyInsight (EI), an Internet-based analytical service that keeps aclose watch on the power generation market.

Portland Natural Gas Transmission System has become the secondmajor import pipeline project being delayed well into the winterfrom expected Nov. 1 start up. The pipeline said the 152 MMcf/d ofCanadian gas scheduled to flow to New England markets this fallprobably will not enter the pipe until sometime in January at theearliest.
