ICE, Nymex Post Record First Quarter Earnings — Again

On the backs of record trading volumes, IntercontinentalExchange (ICE) and The New York Mercantile Exchange (Nymex) continued their battle for market exchange supremacy as both posted record 1Q2008 earnings. ICE posted consolidated net income for 1Q2008 of $92.3 million, a 66% increase compared to $55.6 million during 1Q2007, while Nymex’s posted net income for 1Q2008 increased 27% to a record $71.2 million, compared to $56.2 million for the first quarter 2007. Both companies also posted record 1Q2007 earnings (see Daily GPI, May 3, 2007a; May 3, 2007b).

Newfield Exploration Co. President and COO David F. Schaible, 46, died Saturday following a brief battle with cancer. He leaves his wife Tina and four children. CEO David A. Trice, who will assume the role of president, said Schaible joined the company when it was founded in 1988, and he joined the board of directors in 2002. When he joined Newfield at the age of 28, Schaible was the youngest member of the founding group of employees. He served as executive vice president, Operations and Acquisitions from November 2004 through July. He also served as vice president, Acquisitions and Development from 1995-2004; manager, Acquisitions and Development from 1992-1995; coordinator, Acquisitions and Marketing from 1991-1992; and as petroleum engineer from 1989 to 1991. Before joining Newfield, Schaible was senior production engineer in the Eastern Gulf Division of Tenneco Oil Exploration and Production Co. He earned a degree in petroleum engineering from Marietta College, GA. He also was active in the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Futures Post Gains as Seasonal Bulls Make Appearance

In the back and forth battle occurring recently in natural gas futures the November contract logged a forth day on Wednesday as it gained 14.7 cents to close at $7.010. Despite signs that the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season is on course to be just as underwhelming as the previous year, some traders point to the market’s seasonal tendency to buy at this juncture.

Albertans Believe Province Not Getting Fair Share of Royalties, Survey Finds

While all sides say details like rates and schedules remain negotiable, it appears industry rapidly lost the battle to enlist the hearts and minds of Albertans for its war against an overhaul of provincial royalties. Within two weeks of a stunning report advocating $2 billion in annual royalty increases by a provincially appointed review panel, polls showed opinion swung overwhelmingly in favor of change — including in the Calgary capital of Canada’s natural gas industry.

Nymex also noted that its electronic trading endeavor through the Chicago Mercantile Exchange’s (CME) Globex platform is now regularly outpacing Nymex open outcry floor-traded volumes.

OR Regulators Limit Utility Rate Treatment on Taxes

Bringing to a close a long consumer battle that spawned unrest and stirred state lawmakers, the Oregon Public Utility Commission (PUC) issued a final order Sept. 15 for implementing a new state law that limits the amount of utility rates covering federal, state and local taxes to the actual amounts of taxes paid. The change will start with 2006 tax year payments, and a consumer activist group immediately criticized the PUC’s action as insufficient.
