The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has approved Kern River Gas Transmission Co.’s application to construct 8.6 miles of eight-inch diameter pipeline lateral and a meter station to provide natural gas service to Molycorp Minerals LLC in San Bernadino County, CA. The Mountain Pass Lateral would deliver the gas necessary for Molycorp to generate electricity for its mining and processing operations. The Molycorp facility currently uses electricity from the local grid. The lateral would have a design capacity of 24,270 Dth/d, according to Kern River, which estimated the cost of the project at $15.7 million.

Santa Barbara, CA-based Hypersolar Inc. has filed a patent application for the production of a carbon-neutral methane gas made using sunlight, water and carbon dioxide (CO2) that the company said “can be used as a direct replacement for traditional natural gas.” HyperSolar is developing a solar-powered nanoparticle system that mimics photosynthesis to separate hydrogen from water; the hydrogen can then be reacted with CO2 to produce methane “without drilling or [hydraulic fracturing],” the company said.
