LA Suburb Eyed by New Gas Lines

Located less than five miles from downtown Los Angeles, theindustrial city of Vernon sits as an attractive trophy for one ofthe two proposed natural gas interstate pipelines. Thebusiness-focused local government is finishing construction of anew municipal gas distribution system that will compete withSouthern California Gas’ existing network. By next year, there willbe duplicative gas distribution systems operating.

Williams to Supply Gas and Market Power for AES Plant

Similar to a deal the two companies made last May involvingthree power plants in the Los Angeles Basin, Williams and AESforged an agreement last week in which Williams will supply thefuel and market the power produced from an AES-built and -operatedpower facility in Pennsylvania. The AES Ironwood plant will belocated in South Lebanon Township and will have a capacity toproduce 700 MW. Financial terms of the transaction were notdisclosed.

ARCO Takes Charges, Write-Down

Los Angeles-based ARCO said after-tax special charges in thefourth quarter are expected to total $890 million. Net chargeincludes asset write-downs, restructuring costs, and a tax refund.Asset write-downs are a result of investment impairments totaling$790 million after tax and mainly related to expectations of lowercrude prices. Properties involved include some assets acquired aspart of the Union Texas Petroleum (UTP) purchase and other assetsin the UK North Sea, Middle East and North Africa. Essentially allof the oil and gas properties impacted are overseas.
