Utilities to Give Less Attention to Merchant Activities, More to Core Business

Blame it on Enron Corp.’s collapse or commodity prices that have dropped from the heavens, but whatever the reason, utility executives are rethinking their once lofty notions of the merchant energy side of the business and instead have begun to turn more attention to their core generation businesses — a strategy change that has occurred in just one year.

Pipeline Expansion Hits Highs Not Seen Since 1960’s

Due to the increased natural gas demand in the country sparked by new gas-fired generation coming online, the United States is experiencing the largest wave of pipeline infrastructure expansion since the early 1960’s , according to a recent advisory from Industrial Information Resources Inc. (IIR). The consultant group said it expects 25,000 miles of gas transmission pipeline will be constructed by 2010 and an additional 13,000 miles by 2015, with estimates ranging up to 275,000 miles or more of distribution pipelines.

Duke Earnings Soar on Wholesale Energy Activities

Duke Energy earnings jumped 23% during the second quarter to 54 cents/share led by a 128% quarterly increase in EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) from wholesale energy operations. Duke’s Energy Services division, which includes North American Wholesale Energy, International Energy and Other Energy Services business segments, posted EBIT of $328 million for the quarter, a 58% increase over 2Q2000.
