SoCalGas Offers Millions of Dollars in C/I Rebates
Sempra Energy’s Los Angeles-based Southern California Gas Co. announced Monday it has expanded it business energy efficiency programs, offering individual commercial/industrial (C/I) customers rebates of up to $1.2 million/customer. SoCalGas has 250,000 C/I customers.
In late December, the gas-only utility announced it was offering $10 million in rebates and incentives to its business customers, and now that’s been increased (see Daily GPI, Jan. 2).
SoCalGas said it is increasing the rebates and incentives in the Business Energy Efficiency Program (BEEP) by $700,000 to $1 million/customer/year. It is seeking “very large and comprehensive projects,” according to Mark Gaines, utility customer programs director.
BEEP provides incentives for equipment replacements not covered in the company’s normal rebate program, and also for improving business processes, Gaines said.
In another program, C/I customers, which include large energy users in both the private and public sectors, are eligible for Express Efficiency rebates that offer up to $200,000/customer for switching to more energy-efficient boilers, commercial water heaters, pipe wrap and other measures.
SoCalGas said it also has expanded its Savings by Design incentive program for energy-efficient new construction, paying up to $150,000/project, and customers may qualify for multiple projects within a given year, Gaines said. Food service customers installing new cooking equipment are eligible under this program.
The nation’s largest gas distribution utility cited Orange County’s plant operations as seeing advantages in the expanded incentive programs. “We’re taking another look at some potential energy efficiency projects in light of the higher incentives,” said Keith Geiger, Orange County’s plant operations chief. “Now it’s possible to get incentives of $120,000 or more for projects that used to be capped at $25,000.”
Noting the utility seeks to have more customers take advantage of energy efficiency programs, SoCal’s Gaines said that “in light of the high cost of energy and new gas supply projects, energy efficiency is often the most cost-effective way to meet the rising demand for energy.”
