Russia intends to cut off natural gas supplies to Poland on Wednesday in an escalation that sent European natural gas prices surging over fears that the Kremlin could take similar steps against other nations. 

State-owned Polish Oil and Gas Co. said Tuesday that it received a letter from Gazprom PJSC announcing the complete suspension of supplies under the Yamal contract.

Russia has demanded that European countries comply with an order to pay for gas supplies in rubles in retaliation for sanctions levied against it for the invasion of Ukraine. Poland has been vocal in its opposition to the procedure that calls on Russia’s Gazprombank to convert euro and dollar payments to rubles in order to complete transactions.
