Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) reportedly plan to introduce nonbinding legislation Thursday outlining the parameters of a controversial strategy to combat climate change known as the Green New Deal (GND).

According to a copy of a proposed House Resolution posted by NPR, the plan calls for the United States to transition all of its power generation to renewables over a 10-year period, among other things, but does not call for enacting a carbon tax.

The oil and gas industry has been closely watching developments surrounding a GND. The proposed strategy took a higher profile since Democrats won control of the House of Representatives last November.

American Petroleum Institute spokeswoman Sabrina Fang told NGI that the U.S. oil and gas industry “is meeting the climate challenge head-on, investing billions in cleaner fuels, zero- to low-carbon technologies, and a smaller environmental footprint for operations to safely deliver energy from coast to coast…

“Congress’ goal must be to balance meeting record consumer energy demand reliably and affordably for every American family while enabling environmental progress and API will evaluate and support proposals that strike this necessary balance.”

Former Vice President Al Gore said the resolution “marks the beginning of a crucial dialogue on climate legislation in the U.S.”
