What are Proven Reserves?

In geologic terms, proven (or proved) reserves are those that are known to exist, and are recoverable with current technology. In U.S. GAAP accounting parlance, proved reserves are essentially those that are known to exist with a relatively high degree of certainly, and are either in production, are being drilled, or are planned to be drilled within the next five years.
