The nation’s largest natural gas and electric utility, Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E), agreed to pay around $55 million to settle charges related to the 2019 Kincade and 2021 Dixie wildfires.

The settlement announced Monday is with district attorneys (DA) representing six Northern California counties. As a result, no criminal charges are to be filed in the Dixie Fire, and the criminal complaint regarding the Kincade Fire are to be dismissed by the DAs of Butte, Lassen, Plumas, Shasta, Sonoma and Tehama counties.

PG&E also agreed to pay a $7.5 million civil penalty to Sonoma County related to Kincade and a $1 million civil penalty to each of the five North Valley counties related to the Dixie Fire. The financial commitments within the two stipulated agreements total $55...
