Malaysia is aiming to increase LNG capacity to 55 million metric tons/year (mmty) by 2030 with state-owned Petronas spearheading plans to expand domestic projects and find new supply sources abroad.

Petronas, which reported record high earnings in March, has designated $13.5 billion for natural gas and oil developments over the next four years. A significant share of those investments are aimed at liquefied natural gas projects.

Petronas is working to optimize its liquefaction capacity after the company declared force majeure last October at its 30 million metric tons/year (mmty) Malaysia LNG (MLNG) facility in Bintulu. A leak on a major supply pipeline has limited LNG volumes to Japan, MLNG’s major customer.
