In an attempt to better support record-breaking power demand inthe Midwest, OG&E Electric Services (OG&E), an OGE Corp.subsidiary, said yesterday it plans to reactivate two powergenerators at its Mustang Power Plant. The utility is alsoconsidering other enhancement projects, with a goal to add 1,000 MWto its power supply system.

The announcement came amid a string of new records forelectricity demand by OGE’s customers, whose power usage peaked atan all-time high 5,748 MW at 5 p.m. last Tuesday. OG&E, whichserves 700,000 electric customers in Oklahoma and western Arkansas, operates eight company-owned electricity-generating facilities inOklahoma with combined capacity of about 6,000 MW.

Mustang Units 1 and 2, together able to produce 115 MW of power, were taken offline in the late 1980s when new cogeneration plantsbuilt by other operators created an excess of capacity, OGE said. The Mustang units will return to service for the summer coolingseason in 2000 after equipment inspections and minor repairs.

To attain its 1,000 MW improvement goal, OG&E is also isconsidering the addition of turbines at its Mustang, HorseshoeLake, Seminole, and Muskogee sites.
