Despite recent European Union (EU) proposals to ban Russian LNG exports to Europe, the country’s largest independent natural gas producer, PAO Novatek, has become a key player in the export market for Moscow. 

LNG exports from Novatek’s Yamal LNG in Russia’s Far North reached a record high in April, with 1.89 million tons (Mt) exported and 1.25 Mt delivered to the EU. Yamal LNG delivered 14.65 Mt of LNG to Europe last year, out of the 20.54 Mt produced at the facility, according to Kpler data.   

“Novatek has been Russia’s LNG champion for some time and will continue to strengthen that role,” said Jonathan Stern, a senior research fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies.
