More Gas-Fired Power for New England
Stone & Webster Development and PP&L Global Inc. haveformed a joint venture to build a 250-500 MW gas-fired, merchantpower plant in Wallingford, CT to compete in the New Englandelectricity market. The partners have a signed “exclusivityagreement” with the city government of Wallingford to develop theproject on the site of a small oil-fired power plant theWallingford Department of Public Utilities (DPU) is retiring.
The project is the third major gas-fired project recentlyproposed in Connecticut and part of a growing number of merchantpower plants proposed for New England. Most recently, a unit ofAtlanta-based Southern Company proposed a 535-MW, gas-fired,combined-cycle merchant power plant in Newington, N.H.
Stone & Webster is a wholly owned subsidiary of Stone &Webster, Inc., an international engineering company. PP&LGlobal, and its affiliate PP&L, Inc., are wholly ownedsubsidiaries of PP&L Resources, Inc., Allentown, PA. PP&L,Inc. provides electricity delivery service to about 1.2 millionhomes and businesses in 29 counties of central and easternPennsylvania.
