Elizabeth Anne “Betsy” Moler, former deputy secretary of theU.S. Department of Energy and chair of the Federal EnergyRegulatory Commission,is leaving the public sector for privatepractice at a major law firm.

Moler will become a partner and serve as co-chair of Vinson& Elkins LLP electric power practice. At Vinson & Elkins,Moler will focus on the restructuring of the North American powerindustry and on the increasing role of competition in the gasbusiness, both areas where she has played a major role while ingovernment.

“I hope to put my 30 years of government experience to good useadvising private sector clients as they chart a course through thechallenges posed by an increasingly competitive businessenvironment. Virtually all of my professional experience has beenin the energy area, so Vinson & Elkins, with its large andvaried energy practice, seems like a perfect fit for me.”

Moler played a significant role in FERC’s development andimplementation of Order No. 636 and was chair of FERC when itissued its Order No. 888, which opened the nation’s electrictransmission grid.
