Genie Energy subsidiary Mirabito Natural Gas has launched MirabitoClean to offset the carbon emissions of its Florida customers, which in turn would fund renewable energy projects around the United States.

Mirabito, which supplies gas to commercial, governmental and industrial customers in the Sunshine State, said the program could offset “up to 100%” of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from an entity’s natural gas use with carbon offsets from biomass, landfill gas, and renewable energy sources.

“Because we live and work in Florida, we are able to work directly with our Florida customers to provide natural gas solutions customized for their unique energy needs,” said Mirabito’s Michael Baratz, a division leader. “Our solutions include an array of price options featuring indexed, fixed and capped rate programs.”

Mirabito purchases gas on behalf of its customers and schedules delivery to the customer’s utility. MirabitoClean would operate by matching the amount of gas supplied to customers on the carbon offset plan with the carbon offsets or credits to neutralize CO2 emissions generated. The rate would be 1 metric ton/188.6 therms of offsets/credits of gas supplied to the customer.
