Mexico’s Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) is seeking to stimulate natural gas demand in the country and increase utilization of its vast natural gas pipeline network, a company official said Wednesday.

The state-owned company, in addition to being Mexico’s largest power generator, is also the country’s leading supplier of natural gas, which it imports from the United States.

U.S. gas imported by CFE accounts for about 54% of natural gas consumed in Mexico, said Aniel Altamirano, deputy general director of the firm’s natural gas marketing subsidiary CFEnergía, during the 9th Mexico Gas Summit in San Antonio, TX.

“I think the objective of everyone here is to construct a more mature, more robust natural gas market,” Altamirano told the conference.
