Mexican conglomerate Grupo Carso SAB has bought into the Zama shallow water oil and gas field, considered to be one of the country’s richest hydrocarbon assets.

Carso subsidiary Zamajal SA de CV will acquire a 49.9% interest in the Mexican subsidiary of Houston-based Talos Energy Inc. The purchase price was $124.75 million. The transaction is expected to close within the third quarter of 2023, subject to regulatory approval.

Mexican state oil firm Petróleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, is the operator of Zama with a 50.4% participating interest. Talos has a 17.4% stake, with Germany’s Wintershall Dea GmbH (19.8%) and Edinburgh, Scotland-based Harbour Energy plc (12.4%) rounding out the joint venture.
