If European Union (EU) countries decide to limit Russian LNG imports, the decision could result in potentially disruptive outcomes for global natural gas markets, according to analysts.

Last month, European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson urged EU members and companies to stop buying Russian liquified natural gas, and not to sign any new gas contracts with Russia once the existing contracts have expired.

EU energy ministers have endorsed the proposal. They have asked individual countries to block Russian companies from utilizing Europe’s LNG import infrastructure. The decision to restrict Russian LNG has been left up to each member state, rather than imposing sanctions, which requires agreement from all 27 EU members.
