What is an LCFS credit?

Low Carbon Fuel Standard. This is similar to the Renewable Identification Numbers administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, with three very important differences. 1.) LCFS is a state program run by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), rather than a national mechanism overseen by the federal government, and 2.) the need to acquire and the value of LCFS credits are determined by the carbon intensity (CI) score of a particular fuel. The lower the CI score, the more valuable the LCFS credit, everything else being equal. Oregon runs a carbon credit program very similar to the LCFS standard in California 3.) LCFS credits do not expire, whereas RINs are typically only valid for up to two years.
