Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) launched its newestversion of GasSelect, an automated gas scheduling and energymanagement system. The e-commerce application is available tosubscribers through www.gasselect.com for real-time submission ofgas nominations, trading gas delivery imbalances in a secondarymarket, and for gas consumption information from electronic metersinstalled at customer sites. GasSelect is used to manage thedelivery of 1 Tcf into Southern California for both SoCalGas andSan Diego Gas & Electric.

Columbia Energy Services (CES) will be closing its Canonsburg,PA, offices as part of a restructuring of its retail marketingoperations. The reorganization will combine its major accountswhich are commercial and industrial customers with its mass markets-or residential – operations. Some of the CES staff will berelocated from Canonsburg to the Columbia Energy corporateheadquarters in Herndon, VA. The number of layoffs has not beendetermined. There are 170 employees in CES retail operations,including 57 currently in the Canonsburg office. The move is partof a strategic reassessment of its marketing operations begun inearlier this year.

Reliant Energy plans to construct a 460 MW, gas-fired powerplant in Osceola County, FL, near the town of Holopaw. Two-thirdsof the power produced at the plant will be sold to SeminoleElectric Cooperative Inc. through a five-year contract. The plantwill be called Reliant Energy Osceola and will be about 20 milessoutheast of Orlando. While it will primarily use natural gas forfuel, the plant will also be able to produce electricity from fueloil. Reliant Energy and Seminole signed a contract in July forabout 306 MW of firm peaking capacity beginning Dec. 1, 2001.
