Germany’s government continues to face criticism from environmental groups for its ambitious LNG import capacity plans and for supporting natural gas at the recent G7 meeting in Japan.

Europe LNG Capacity

Claims that Germany overestimated its liquified natural gas capacity needs have not been confirmed by the government. Two proposed onshore terminals in Stade and Wilhelmshaven, and the proposed mega-terminal off Rügen have reportedly been excluded from government plans adopted last year to accelerate LNG development.

According to Environmental Action Germany, a leaked memo “clearly shows that the German government is planning massive LNG overcapacity.” Environmental groups see the government’s commitment to the super-chilled fuel coming at the expense of net-zero emissions targets.
