CF Industries Holdings Inc. has clinched an agreement to capture and permanently store up to 2 million metric tons/year (mmty) of carbon emissions from its Louisiana manufacturing complex with ExxonMobil.

Under what is said to be one of the largest-of-its-kind commercial agreements, ExxonMobil plans to develop a 125,000-acre carbon dioxide (CO2) storage facility in Vermilion Parish. Once the project starts up, scheduled for early 2025, ExxonMobil in turn reached an agreement with EnLink Midstream LLC to transport the CO2 through its pipeline network.

EnLink spokesperson Megan Wright told NGI that within the state, “the Mississippi River corridor emits 80 mmty of CO2 and makes up nearly two-thirds of Louisiana’s total industrial CO2 emissions.
