As requested, the judge presiding over Enron Corp.’s bankruptcy last week granted an extension for the company to file its reorganization plan. Judge Arthur Gonzalez said it would be “counterproductive” to deny the request, which was made in late June (ee NGI, June 30).

According to court documents, Enron has reached a tentative settlement with its creditors. However, it asked for an extension to July 11 to “resolve technical electronic filing issues.” The document said that “the voluminous and unwieldy documentation of the chapter 11 plan and disclosure statement has given rise to an assortment of technical issues regarding the electronic filing of such documents.”

Enron’s lawyers indicated that the plan will be approximately 150 pages, and the disclosure statement will be approximately 600 pages, with charts, graphs, flow charts and presentations. “The very size and nature of such documents creates severe problems and threatens to severely disrupt the electronic filing system of the court, both upon the filing of such documents…as well as the downloading of the documents by parties in interest.”
