Dynegy Inc. has started full-scale operations at the RockinghamPower Plant, a simple-cycle generating facility in RockinghamCounty, NC. The 800 MW plant, developed in just 12 months, is thethird generation facility Dynegy has put on line this summer.

The plant brings to 1,055 the total megawatts added. It is thelargest facility developed by Dynegy under its planned generationdevelopment program.

The Rockingham plant currently is supplying Duke Power, adivision of Duke Energy Corp., with 600 MW of capacity. Under theterms of a power purchase agreement signed by Dynegy and Duke Powerin September 1998, Duke Power will purchase 600 MW forthree-and-a-half years beginning this month. Dynegy Marketing andTrade is marketing the remaining 200 MW capacity in the wholesaleelectricity market to investor-owned utilities, electriccooperatives and municipalities throughout the Southeast and otherregions of the country.

“As one of the first new generation projects completed in thestate of North Carolina, this facility will enhance electricservice reliability in a region experiencing rapid growth,” saidSteve Bergstrom, Dynegy president.

The Rockingham Power Plant is located on a 69-acre site nearBethany, NC. It consists of five dual fuel-fired combustionturbines. Natural gas to fuel the facility is delivered through apipeline interconnect with Williams. Dynegy signed a long-termnatural gas interconnection agreement with Williams in July 1999 toprovide capacity for up to 222 MMcf/d. Transmission access forpower transactions is delivered via a 230 kV Duke Energytransmission line interconnect near the plant.

Dynegy’s other additions include the recently completed anexpansion at its Rocky Road Power Plant near Chicago. Theinstallation of an additional 100 MW natural gas-fired combustionturbine in less than 11 months increased the facility’s generatingcapacity to a nominal 350 MW. Dynegy began operations at theCalcasieu Generation Project, a 155 MW natural gas-fired peakingfacility near Lake Charles, La., on May 31, 2000. The company hasprojects underway to add another 1,200 MW next summer.
