Duke Energy and Williams confirmed Friday that they received individual subpoenas from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Francisco as part of an ongoing federal grand jury investigation of natural gas and electricity suppliers in California. It was unclear how many other merchant energy companies, besides Duke and Williams received the summons Friday. The workings of the grand jury, of course, are secret.

In a short prepared statements acknowledging their targeting in the federal investigation, Duke’s and Williams’ corporate spokespeople said their companies will “cooperate with the U.S. Attorney as it has with other government organizations inquiring into similar issues.” They said the subpoenas were specifically related to their California operations.

Later in the day Friday, Duke’s California spokesperson Patrick Mullen said the company’s lawyers are reviewing the subpoena and Duke most likely would have no further comments until next week after more fully reviewing the documents.

A Williams short printed statement indicated from its Tulsa headquarters that it indents to “respond to the government inquiry,” noting that it has already cooperated “with out government organizations inquiring into similar issues.”

Calls into the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Francisco by Power Market Today were not immediately returned.
