Duke/Fluor Daniel was awarded a turnkey contract Wednesday tobuild a 550 MW, $240 million cogeneration plant in Dearborn MI.Details of the contract were not disclosed.

Dearborn Industrial Generation L.L.C., an alliance between CMSEnergy and DTE Energy Services that founded the project, hiredDuke/Fluor Daniel to construct the plant and begin operation byJuly. Engineering for the plant began last November, andmobilization for construction began last month. The facility isexpected to use 100 MMcf/d of gas to supply 400 MW of electricityand 1.7 million pounds per hour of steam to Rouge Steel and FordMotor Co. for 15 years. The gas will be provided by the PanhandleEastern Pipeline.

“We are a managing and operating unit, so we don’t provideconstruction,” CMS spokesman Kelly Farr said of the DearbornIndustrial Generation partnership. CMS is the managing partner with70% interest. “We felt with Duke/Fluor, we could get the bestservice at the best price considering the very tight timeschedule.” Farr added that the plant is projected to produce moreelectricity than either Rouge or Ford will be able to consume. CMSwill market and sell this leftover energy as spot power on theMichigan grid.

Duke Energy and Fluor Daniel joined forces in 1989 to formDuke/Fluor Daniel. It is a full service engineering, procurementand construction contractor based in Charlotte North Carolina. Ithas operations in 15 states and the District of Columbia as well asprojects around the globe.
