FERC on Monday extended the deadline for Copiah County Storage, a subsidiary of Duke Energy’s Market Hub Partners, to develop a 3 Bcf salt dome natural gas storage facility in Copiah County, MS.

Copiah said the extension until June 2008 “[was] necessary to allow for the development of the requisite storage infrastructure to accommodate the growing liquefied natural gas market as well as to serve electric generation demand,” according to a letter order issued by FERC’s Office of Energy Projects. The project was approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in June 2002.

While the project will have an initial working gas capacity of 3 Bcf, it can be expandable to 9 Bcf, according to the company. It will connect with Duke Energy Gas Transmission’s Texas Eastern Transmission system near Union Church, MS, and potentially other pipes, including Gulf South, Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line, Southern Natural Gas and Associated Intrastate Mississippi.

In its application, Copiah said the proposed project would have 300,000 Dth/d of deliverability and 150,000 Dth/d injection capability in the primary cavern, which would extend about 5,000 feet below the ground surface.
