China is on track to re-export the highest annual amount of LNG since it started importing the super-chilled fuel in 2006 as the country’s major buyers get more active in the spot market and domestic demand remains weak.

China LNG

According to Kpler data, China has sold more than 0.40 million tons (Mt) of LNG year-to-date, up from the 0.13 Mt it sold over the same period in 2022, when the country reloaded a record 0.56 Mt. That’s also well above the 0.07 Mt it re-exported in 2019, the only other year it reloaded cargoes for sale to international buyers. China doesn’t produce liquefied natural gas, but it is one of the world’s largest importers, with 183 million metric tons/year of regasification capacity that’s been steadily built out at 43 installations in recent years.
