A pilot project to demonstrate hydrogen fueling for railway systems is being advanced in a collaboration between units of Chevron Corp., BNSF Railway Co. and Caterpillar Inc.

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) to advance the project was clinched by Chevron U.S.A. Inc, BNSF and Caterpillar’s Progress Rail. The demonstration project is designed to “confirm the feasibility and performance of hydrogen fuel for use as a viable alternative to traditional fuels for line-haul rail,” said Chevron U.S.A. Inc., Caterpillar’s Progress Rail and railroad giant BNSF.

“Chevron is dedicated to scaling up its hydrogen business to help meet the needs of customers who want to reduce the lifecycle carbon emissions of their operations,” said Chevron New Energies President Jeff Gustavson.
