Landfill sites are set to reap the first benefits of a Canadian government reward program for greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction if methane is harvested from decaying waste or is permanently disposed.

The federal environment department announced that dump owners, chiefly but not only municipal governments, are eligible for the first in a planned series of cleanup certificates that would be granted by a national GHG offset credit system.

The result would be a carbon offset market, according to Canada Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault. “Starting with landfills, we’re putting in place a market-based mechanism to incentivize businesses and municipalities to invest in the technologies and innovations that cut pollution.”
