California Energy Commission (CEC) research engineers are planning to take a deeper look at the potential for green hydrogen in the long term to help decarbonize the state’s energy system.

Three kinds of hydrogen have been gaining attention in recent months as operators look for low and zero-carbon energy alternatives. 

Hydrogen can be produced from natural gas and other sources. Green hydrogen is produced from excess renewable electricity in which electrolysis is used to split hydrogen and oxygen from water. There also is blue hydrogen, which is created by electrolysis using conventional electricity, a process in which the carbon is captured and stored.
