The Ohio House of Representatives late Wednesday afternoon voted 55-35 in favor of a bill that would levy a 2.5% severance tax on oil and natural gas produced from horizontal wells.

Substitute House Bill 375 now heads to the state Senate for consideration. The bill’s passage in the Republican-controlled House appeared to mostly follow party lines.

A spokesman for Republican Gov. John Kasich said the bill “falls short” of the governor’s expectations but did not indicate a veto was imminent, assuming the bill passes the Senate, which is also controlled by Republicans.

NGI’s Shale Daily will have more on this developing story on Thursday.
