Calpine to Acquire 21 GE Turbines
Calpine announced that it will purchase 21 model 7FB turbines
from GE Power Systems and take delivery over the next three years.
Calpine hopes that the acquisition will help it reach its five-year
strategic plan of 40,000 MW of power generation by the end of 2004.
GE will deliver the first 12 turbines in 2003, with the other nine
following sometime in 2004. The 21 turbines when operated in
combined cycle have a total generating capacity of 5,600 MW.
"This purchase further ensures that Calpine is able to take
advantage of its industry-leading position in project development,"
said Doug Kieta, senior vice president of construction for Calpine.
"Calpine's aggressive turbine procurement program enables the
company to act decisively in announcing new power projects and
enter new electricity markets across the country."
GE Power Systems said it is holding a global celebration this
week to honor employees, customers and suppliers for their role in
helping meet unprecedented global demand for more efficient, more
reliable and more environmentally friendly energy. The company
recently reported that it had over 15 GW of power operating
worldwide and had a record second quarter with revenues up 60%.
"We are entering a new world of energy where reliability and
quality are paramount," says Robert L. Nardelli, CEO of GE Power
Systems. "Our employees, customers and suppliers have created a
global partnership that is focused on providing top-quality energy
