Almost a third of gas and oil companies surveyed expect to havecompleted Year-2000 (Y2K) remediation by the end of the year, according to the results of a new survey by the Natural Gas Council(NGC). It further found that 73% said they would be ready by June1999, while all respondents indicated they would be prepared byDecember 1999.

The survey results were presented during a recent conferencesponsored by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on the Y2Kproblem confronting the energy industry, specifically whethercomputers will be able to recognize the “2000” date and work.

Along with the American Petroleum Council (API), the NGCsurveyed more than 800 gas and oil companies to assess the progressthat their industries have made on the Y2K problem and to ensurethat all industry systems are ready for the date rollover on Jan.1, 2000. Specifically, the survey results, as of this month, revealed that 36% were in the process of remediation, or fixing, their computer software to accommodate the Y2K date, while another19% were in the process of validating the results of their work.

As for embedded hardware systems, 28% of the industryrespondents said they were assessing the problems while 26%indicated they were in the process of fixing their systems. Another14% said they were currently validating the results of their work.
