Ten people were reportedly killed Tuesday following a fire at a natural gas pipeline distribution center near the South Texas-Mexico border.

Mexico’s state-owned Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) said an investigation has been launched after a fire claimed the lives of the employees at the center, which is near Reynosa, across the U.S. border near McAllen, TX. The fire, which started around 10:45 a.m. CDT Tuesday, was extinguished and the pipeline, which transmits gas from wells in the Burgos Basin, was shut off.

“Specialized technicians with Pemex Exploration and Production will proceed to carry out the analysis of the root cause of the accident, as well as the evaluation of the damage caused to the installation,” Pemex said. Pemex CEO Juan Jose Suarez Coppel was set to arrive in Reynosa Tuesday night, according to reports.

According to Pemex, authorities temporarily evacuated residents living within a three-mile radius of the plant, but there were no injuries to anyone beyond the facility. At least 700 people were working at the plant at the time of the explosion, according to a Pemex employee who was treated for injuries.

Media reports said at least a dozen people had serious injuries. Pemex said soldiers, firefighters and state workers helped company crews extinguish the fire.
