AGL Resources Inc. unit Pivotal LNG said it is buying a 60,000 gal/d natural gas liquefaction facility in Trussville, AL, in support of its plans to market liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the wholesale vehicle fuels market.

Pivotal LNG has embarked on a venture selling LNG in the wholesale market to buyers that then deliver it to end-users such as trucking fleet operators. “This value chain will provide end-users with a lower-cost, environmentally clean and abundant American fuel as a substitute for diesel,” AGL said. The company is buying the facility from the Utilities Board of the City of Trussville.

“This is an exciting time in the natural gas industry,” said AGL CEO John W. Somerhalder II. “We are seeing a trend toward more companies interested in fueling trucks, fleet or heavy-duty vehicles, and other large-horsepower engines with natural gas. The addition of the Trussville LNG facility aligns with the needs of our new wholesale business venture under Pivotal LNG.”

Heavy-duty trucking, remote power generation, marine engines and railroad locomotives are just a few examples of where LNG can serve as a less-expensive and environmentally friendly alternative fuel to diesel, AGL said.

“Our company is another key component of AGL Resources’ strategy to expand the use of natural gas in the alternative fuel market through the use of affordable, clean-burning, abundant and domestic natural gas,” said Pivotal Vice President David Schultz.
