FERC Wednesday officially vacated the certificate approving the Weaver's Cove Energy LLC liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal and associated facilities proposed for Fall River, MA.
Weaver's Cove asked the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to terminate the project last month (see Daily GPI, June 15). "No one...opposed the request," the FERC order said [CP04-36, CP04-41]. The order vacating the certificate came almost six years after the date that the Commission issued a certificate to Weaver's Cove.
Within those six years, the Weaver's Cove project -- which was sponsored by Hess LNG and Poten & Partners -- was the target of intense opposition by local, state and federal officials (see Daily GPI, Jan. 18, 2005; Nov. 23, 2004; Sept. 22, 2004).
The company fought an unrelenting battle in the courts, before federal and state regulatory agencies, in Congress and with environmentalists to win support for the proposed facility, but it was met with opposition at every turn.
