No one was injured by an unintended gas flare at Exelon Corp.’s Handley power plant in Fort Worth at about 7:30 a.m. Monday. A flame more than 100 feet high erupted when a safety relief valve was opened on a 24-inch diameter gas line and a spark ignited the gas.

An Exelon spokesman told NGI that the fire was extinguished in about 30 minutes. He said the line is on Exelon property but belongs to Energy Transfer Partners.

The flare was recorded by Texas Department of Transportation cameras on Interstate 820. The fire disrupted traffic for a while.

An Energy Transfer spokeswoman said the cause of the incident is under investigation. She said she did not know how old the pipeline is.

The Handley plant has five gas-fired generating units, but two of them are retired. The remaining units at the “intermediate” facility were not scheduled to run Monday, the Exelon spokesman said. The line that had the fire serves Units 4 and 5. He said the facility was being checked for any damage.
