Former energy industry and utility senior executive and unpaid adviser to the governor, Michael Peevey, was confirmed for a six-year appointment to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) on a 32-3 vote of the 40-member state Senate. Governor Gray Davis reappointed Peevey to the regulatory commission on Dec. 31, 2002, designating him as president.

The governor originally appointed Peevey as a commissioner March 5, 2002, to fill the remainder of Richard Bilas’s unexpired term. Peevey’s new term expires Dec. 31, 2008.

In extending a hand to the state legislators who are looking at various reform packages for the state’s energy agencies this year, Peevey said it was “an honor” to be appointed by the governor and confirmed by the state Senate. He said he intended to keep the CPUC’s reputation as a “pro-consumer body,” along with committing to ensure the state has “healthy, environmentally friendly utilities and an economy in which business can do well.”
