NERC Encourages Higher Compliance Rate

Regional Reliability Councils and their members are about 90% compliant, but work still needs to be done to bring standards up and encourage non-members to join, according to the latest report from the North American Electricity Reliability Council. NERC has published its findings for the second of four phases of its Year 2000 Compliance Program, created to ensure adherence to NERC and regional standards.

Problems with non-regional member participation and non-compliance by non-members remains "very difficult" to obtain, according to the report. However, increased awareness and compliance process improvements, made following the completion in 1999 of the first phase of the program, have already helped NERC develop insight into improvements for the future.

In the past two years, NERC has been able to ascertain where there are problems as well as opportunities when the program is finalized. Among its findings are the following:
