ARCADIS Geraghty & Miller, an environmental and engineeringservices consulting firm, and the Gas Research Institute (GRI) haveformed an alliance to commercialize natural gas co-firing andrelated technologies that significantly enhance steam boilerperformance.

Co-firing-the combustion of natural gas with solid fuel undercarefully designed conditions-reduces emissions, increasesoperating efficiency, and reduces overall operating costs.

Formation of the alliance, called “Acurex EnergyT,” follows asuccessful five-year technology development and demonstrationprogram. The program was sponsored by GRI and performed by AcurexEnvironmental, a wholly owned subsidiary of ARCADIS Geraghty &Miller, with support from Coen Company, Burlingame, CA, and thenatural gas and boiler industries. The program led to thedevelopment of cofiring hardware and applications that have beensuccessful in improving industrial boiler performance and reducingemissions with wood- and coal-fired boilers.

“Return on investments have typically been achieved in less thantwo years through recovery of lost capacity, improved efficiency, fuel flexibility, and the elimination of costs associated withalternate emissions control.” said Acurex Energy General ManagerHoward Mason.

Acurex Energy, based in Mountain View, CA., will provide a fullrange of boiler services and applications to U.S. and Canadianindustrial and small utility boiler operators. Services offeredinclude:

Turnkey boiler cofiring installations and retrofits; ancillaryservices for boiler upgrades, including fuel conversions andemissions control engineering; innovative approaches to projectsupport, and; assistance with permitting, compliance and obtainingtax credits or emission-reduction credits for boiler upgradeprojects.
