El Paso Pipeline Partners LP subsidiary Wyoming Interstate Co. Ltd. (WIC) has placed its Kanda lateral pipeline and accompanying mainline expansion in service, the company said last Friday.

The new, 124-mile, 24-inch diameter lateral provides 400,000 Dth/d of capacity from the Uintah Basin to WIC’s existing mainline in Sweetwater County, WY. The WIC mainline system was also expanded with 20,600 hp of additional compression installed at the existing Wamsutter Compressor Station in Wyoming. Capital costs of the project total $189 million.

A spokesman would not reveal how much gas was flowing through the lateral and mainline facilities.

WIC proposed the Kanda Lateral and Mainline Expansion Project to address demand for capacity to transport gas from production areas in the Uintah Basin to other markets and the demand for additional mainline capacity sought by Kerr-McGee, a subsidiary of Anadarko Petroleum Corp.

Kerr-McGee has signed precedent agreements for 400,000 Dth/d of capacity on the Kanda Lateral for 15 years, and for 137,000 Dth/d of mainline expansion capacity from Kanda to Wamsutter for the first two years of the agreement, increasing to 150,000 Dth/d on the second anniversary of the in-service date of the mainline expansion facilities. At Wamsutter, Kerr-McGee would have access to a number a pipelines that serve the Midwest and eastern markets.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approved the facilities for service in December (see NGI, Dec. 24, 2007).
