Aria Energy, which engineers and provides landfill gas services from its home base in Novi, MI, has purchased a half-stake in BP plc’s Mavrix LLC to distribute renewable natural gas (RNG) to U.S. customers.

Under terms of the transaction, Aria has assumed full responsibility for operations, maintenance and administration of the Mavrix operating facilities in Canton, MI, and North Shelby, TN. It also plans to continue developing, engineering and constructing facilities in Oklahoma City and Atlanta.

No financial details were provided, but BP earlier this year paid an estimated $155 million for Mavrix. BP would provide Aria marketing and distribution services to get the RNG into the marketplace.

“We are thrilled to partner with BP on these projects and other opportunities going forward,” said Aria CEO Richard DiGia. “This is a positive step for our company and the RNG industry.”

BP in March acquired Mavrix as part of a deal to buy the upstream portion of Clean Energy Fuels Corp.’s RNG business.

Landfill gas, aka LFG, is 50% methane, produced naturally as waste decomposes. Landfills above a certain size are required to install collection systems to transport the gas to a collection facility. The Mavrix facilities convert the LFG to RNG, which primarily is used in the United States to fuel natural gas vehicle fleets, including heavy-duty trucks.

Aria owns and/or operates a diversified portfolio of 44 LFG recovery and processing projects across 17 states, collectively representing 273.8 MWe of energy capacity. The portfolio includes 29 owned projects that generate electricity and eight that produce pipeline-quality RNG. Operations and maintenance services also are provided for seven projects owned by third parties.
