Northern Natural Gas Co. received FERC approval Thursday to add 210,000 Dth/d of firm transportation capacity to its pipeline system in West Texas.

Dubbed the Gaines County Crossover Project, Northern received the OK to construct an 18,089 hp compressor station and related facilities at the intersection of its 30-inch Spraberry to Plains and Kermit to Beaver mainlines.

The $40.7 million project will enable Northern to provide the 210,000 Dth/d to serve several natural gas-fired power plants operated by Golden Spread Electric Cooperative. Golden Spread signed up for firm capacity under a 14-year agreement after Northern held an open season last January and February.

Northern owns the 20-acre site for the new compression station, and no landowners protested the project application, according to FERC.

Northern submitted its application to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in September.

Northern, a subsidiary of Omaha, NE-based Berkshire Hathaway Energy, operates a 14,700-mile pipeline system that stretches across 11 states from West Texas to Michigan’s upper peninsula. It serves 81 utilities and numerous producers, marketers and industrial users, providing access to producing areas in Canada, the Rockies, the Midcontinent and the Permian Basin.
