A trio of offshore technology specialists is allying to develop innovative subsea well intervention systems, specifically for deep/ultra-deepwater basins and high-pressure environments.

Helix Energy Solutions Group Inc., Schlumberger Ltd. and OneSubsea, a Cameron and Schlumberger company, plan to develop technologies, equipment and services to optimize the value chain of subsea well intervention systems.

“The future for subsea well intervention and the value creation it brings is still in the early stages of growth, and the potential for pioneering additional methods for value creation is significant,” Helix CEO Owen Kratz said. “We are excited about the possibilities.”

Helix is an offshore well intervention provider, while Schlumberger is one of the world’s leading suppliers of oilfield technology and services. Schlumberger and Cameron created OneSubsea about two years ago to leverage their expertise for a complete production system — from pore space to export space (see Daily GPI, Nov. 16, 2012).

Schlumberger CEO Paal Kibsgaard said the new well intervention alliance with Helix would create a “step-change in performance” throughout the exploration and production value chain.

The alliance also “represents a real advance in subsea intervention,” Cameron CEO Jack Moore said. “Bringing together OneSubsea, Helix and Schlumberger capabilities will deliver simpler, more cost effective and more efficient intervention solutions, all through a single, collaborative approach to ensure our clients are benefiting from the technologically advanced solutions the alliance will be able to offer.”

Primary objectives include expanding applications enabled by subsea well-access technology and the evolution of Helix’s vessels to provide well intervention and additional support services, such as well commissioning, artificial lift support and abandonment, which are traditionally performed using drilling rigs.
